REMNANT
When the apocalypse came, the sea rose, rain poured for weeks without end, and the world was flooded. The animals fled the rising floodwaters, terrified and dying by the thousands under the relentless onslaught. For days they ran, climbing higher and higher, instinct driving them. There seemed to be no end to the rising terror- it was as though the water hunted them, stalked them with utterly malicious intent
They came to the highest point their failing strength could take them, and there they waited. Under awed and fearful eyes the waters rose and rose, engulfing plains and forests, hills and mountains, until it seemed that nothing could ever survive this- there was no place high enough to climb, nowhere left to run to. They resigned themselves to their deaths with despairing hearts, and waited for their collective doom to be visited upon them.
They waited in vain, though, for eventually the waters ceased to rise, levelling out and leaving the survivors a mountain island- the prize at the end of a life and death marathon. Only the strongest and the luckiest lived. Of the animals who made a successful bid for life, one species – the horse – was singled out for elevation to the next stage of evolution. Strange gods propelled them down the path they would always have travelled, in their own time, to a point where they gained knowledge, language, and abilities that could be termed supernatural. Within weeks animals that had once been relatively simple, uncomplicated creatures now had active, analytical minds and voices that sounded so much like they always had, but that said so much more.
But with these advanced minds and powers came vanity, greed, lust, anger, pride and, most importantly, envy. The high grounds are the only truly safe places on the island and those who do not possess them, covet them. As strong, charismatic leaders rise and build their bands of determined survivors, the distant drumbeats of an inevitable war grow ever louder. There can be only one true kingdom - one prevailing throneland - else the bloodshed will never cease.
War is coming to the Island of Remnant. There is nowhere to run.
